How to convert a PDF to JSON

  1. Choose a PDF that contains tables, or drop it into the tool.
  2. Click Extract JSON. We read text positions in your browser and OCR pages that have almost no text.
  3. Preview the first detected table on the page.
  4. Download the .json file. It includes tables[] (each with name, isTable, and rows) plus extracted text. Use Extract PDF fields if you want named labels.

Features

Same table extract

PDF to JSON uses the PDF to Excel job as JSON. Detection runs in your browser. We do not upload the PDF.

Tables, not named fields

The file is { text, usedOcr, tables }. It is not Extract PDF fields, not Invoice to JSON, and not Image to JSON.

Free to start

Files stay local

This tool does not store your PDF on our servers.

Best-effort tables

We cluster text by position. Pages with almost no selectable text are OCR’d in your browser (up to 15 pages). If no table is found, the page text is placed in one column.

Works in the browser

Use it from any modern browser on Windows, Mac, or Linux.

PDF to JSON vs Extract PDF fields

People search for PDF to JSON when they want detected tables as structured data. This page runs the same /pdf-to-excel extract, then downloads tables[] as JSON. It is not a second tool in the Tools grid.

Extract PDF fields fills named labels you pick (invoice number, vendor, total). Invoice to JSON and Bank statement to JSON remap columns. This page is the generic table extract only.

Guests get 5 free jobs a day. The file never leaves your computer. Use PDF to Excel for the workbook, or PDF to CSV for the first table only.
